New media innovations in participatory politics
Democratic politics worldwide are increasingly being conducted and re-configured through the domain of digital communications networks. The socio-technical developments, such as Web 2.0, facilitating these media-saturated public spheres are in little doubt. What is highly contested however is the interpretation of what these profound changes offer for democratic governance in the twenty-first century. At its heart is the recognition that these new media networks are themselves the crucial site for a historical confrontation between opposing political and/or business interests and discourses intent upon forging new forms of social relations.

Zeit: Freitag, 30.10., 14-18h
Ort: Graduiertenzentrum, Besprechungsraum (Ferstlgasse 5, 1010 Wien)
Zielgruppe: DissertantInnen aller sozialwissenschaftlichen Studienrichtungen mit Interesse am Thema

Programm

14:00 Vorstellungsrunde

14:15 Einführung
Susanne Rabler: Identitäten in Massive Multiplayer Online Games

The focus of the General Online Research (GOR) is the discussion of basic research, innovative developments, and practical experiences in the field of online research. Online research covers a) all methods, instruments and theories that are dealing with the collection of data via online networks and b) effects of online applications and technologies on all levels of society. That involves mobile communication as well. The annual GOR conference involves research mainly within the social and behavioral sciences. GOR 10 supports the exchange of knowledge not only in an interdisciplinary way, but also between researchers and practitioners as well as between universities and companies.

Tom Boellstorff, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Irvine
Editor-in-Chief, American Anthropologist

When: October 15, 2009, 16:00
Where: Konferenzraum, Institut für Politikwissenschaft, Neues Institutsgebäude, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna, 2. Stock

Millions of people around the world today spend portions of their lives in online virtual worlds. Second Life is one of the largest of these virtual worlds. The residents of Second Life create communities, buy property and build homes, go to concerts, meet in bars, attend weddings and religious services, buy and sell virtual goods and services, find friendship, fall in love—the possibilities are endless, and all encountered through a computer screen. Tom Boellstorff conducted more than two years of fieldwork in Second Life, living among and observing its residents in exactly the same way anthropologists traditionally have done to learn about cultures.

In this talk, Professor Boellstorff draws from his research on this new frontier of human life to discuss how virtual worlds present profound challenges to our understanding of the human. There are indeed ways that virtual worlds represent radically new possibilities for human being. However, just as challenging (and possibly more surprising) is the discovery that virtual worlds show how in some ways humans have always been virtual. As a result, virtual worlds in all their rich complexity build upon a human capacity for culture that is as old as humanity itself.

April 6 – 9, 2010
International Federation for Systems Research

Cybernetics – „the study of communication and control in the animal and the machine“ (N.Wiener) – has recently returned to the forefront, not only in cyberspace and cyberpunk, but, even more important, contributing to the corroboration of various scientific theories. Additionally, an ever increasing number of research areas, including social and economic theories, theoretical biology, ecology, computer science, and robotics draw on ideas from second order cybernetics. Artificial intelligence, evolved directly from cybernetics, has not only technological and economic, but also important social impacts. With a marked trend towards interdisciplinary cooperation and global perspectives, this important role of cybernetics is expected to be further strengthened over the next years.

Since 1972, the biennial European Meetings on Cybernetics and Systems Research (EMCSR) have served as a forum for discussion of converging ideas and new aspects of different scientific disciplines. As on previous occasions, a number of sessions providing wide coverage of the rapid developments will be arranged, complemented with daily plenary meetings, where eminent speakers will present latest research results.

Foreword by Ben Shneiderman, University of Maryland

This handbook addresses current issues of research into socio-technical systems (STSs) which are computer technologies that enable social interactions of any type, whether conversations (email), group discussions (chat), group writing (wiki), online trade (E-bay), online learning (WebCT), social networking (Facebook) or others. The Internet has evolved from hosting information to hosting social interactions. Yet as technology becomes part of social life, surely social life should be part of technical design? Without this, a „social-technical gap“ emerges – a deficit between what society wants and what technology does. This book aims to reduce that gap, by suggesting how social knowledge can synergize with technical knowledge.

„If it’s on teh interweb it must be true“?

René König: 9/11 was an inside job! – YouTube als Plattform für alternative Deutungen des 11. September 2001

Axel Maireder: Slap me happy – but real! Die Realitätskonstruktionen von Jugendlichen zu Amateur-Gewaltvideos

Sigrid Jones: Werbung oder nicht Werbung?

Axel Kittenberger: Who is (not) real?

Philipp Budka: ’Don’t Call me Eskimo!’ Repräsentationen indigener Musik(er) auf YouTube

Susanne Rabler: Was Avatare in ihrer Freizeit tun, und wie World of Warcraft in der Realität aussieht.

Thomas Lohninger: How can this be real?

Social Networking and Communities – The big and the small screen, 26-27 November, 2009, Second CMI Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.Call for Papers: Deadline for abstracts: 14 August, 2009

Worldwide, people connect via the web and extend their social communities beyond what could ever have been realized without the web. Denmark globally has one of the highest numbers of users of web-based social networking sites per habitant. Till now, users of web-based social networking and communities have mainly used traditional computers with large screens. For many users, the concept of social networking means always on which sets focus on the trend of being able to do social networking also on smart phones and other smaller screens. The transition from the big screen to the small screen in relation to social networking and communities outlines a number of challenges that the second CMI conference will discuss. Areas to be discussed are: how to secure the privacy for social network users; which are the demands to operators/content providers on the price structure; how can the technological sustainability be secured with the smaller screens; which are the alternative interaction mechanisms to secure that users still have a good user experience; which new types of services will be relevant to mobile devices; how will the different initiatives and services coexist and which demands must be set to the standardization when convergence takes place in this way?
The second CMI conference discusses the demands and challenges set out to the market and the stakeholders; to the technology and the interaction between users and the technology; and the users and their demands to the mobile part of the web-based social networking.
